The changing face of football in the West

In what is already shaping up as a landmark year for women’s football with the introduction of the AFL Women’s competition, the Western Region Football League is excited to announce it will run its own Girls Competition in 2017.

After a number of years being combined with the Essendon District Football League, the WRFL will have a standalone competition next year, featuring Under-12, Under-15 and Under-18 girls.

The league has had an overwhelming number of queries from clubs wanting to be involved in the 2017 competition, with about 16 WRFL member clubs showing significant interest.

Currently there are at least eight teams committed in each of the Girls’ age groups, an exciting sign for the growth of the game in Melbourne’s west.

The WRFL is also committed to having a women’s competition next season, however the makeup of this is still to be determined with AFL Victoria.
